University Boat Race

University Boat Race
The Boat Race is an annual rowing race between Oxford and Cambridge Universities along the Thames, first rowed at Henley in 1829. The race became an annual event in 1839, and moved to its present course from Putney to Mortlake (four and one-quarter miles) in 1845. Cambridge recorded the longest straight run of wins from 1924 to 1936, and there has been one dead-heat in 1877. The event is televised by the BBC, bet on by thousands of punters, and deemed to sit alongside such once-ayear television regulars as the Grand National and the London Marathon as a quintessential British armchair spectacle. Most people arbitrarily support one or other of the two ‘blues’, and the elevation of a parochial Oxbridge novelty to a national occasion is arguably one of the chief sporting definitions, like Royal Ascot or the Henley Regatta, of a continuing class society.
